Summer Evening Near Fullerton Beach

fullerton_beachThe summer in Chicago has been unusually cool this year.  But that doesn’t stop people from taking full advantage of the beaches.  This park overlooks the beach at Fullerton Avenue and the buildings downtown can be seen a couple miles south.

There are a few things that scare me (from an artistic perspective).  Water and people are at the top of that list, so I had to work hard to stifle the voices in my head saying, “what are you doing?  You can’t paint that!”  The water didn’t work out as well as I had envisioned; but given that I was going for something of stylized painting and not realism, I’m really happy with the group of picnickers on the grass.

  1. Well, I think you successfully stifled those voices! Reducing the water and people to their simple shapes makes them read exactly as they are…great job! No need for further detail. The painting on the previous post is well done also!

  2. I agree with Jennifer. I think this is a great painting and all the elements work very well. Drawing people in public is really scary to me too. Good for you for facing that fear and overcoming it so well!

  3. I have yet to attempt people. You did a great job, also with the water, the beach and the skyline. Nice painting.

  4. I think you did very well. Your water looks just fine. Like your people sketch there too. That’s something I haven’t attempted yet in any of my paintings.

  5. I think you’ve successfully delivered the whole package here. I don’t care what those voices said(I’ve got a lot of those myself too) but sometimes you just need to go ahead with what you feel is right :) And you did just that and the result needs no word to describe further ^^

  6. I live in the far northwest suburbs of chicago and have been enjoying the summer, too.
Your triumph over the voices is a good thing, Congratulations.
